‘Magralen’ wins award at Maltese festival

Iranian short ‘Magralen’ grabs award at the 57th Golden Knight Malta Int'l Short Film Festival.

Iranian short ‘Magralen’ has grabbed an award at the 2019 edition of the Golden Knight Malta International Short Film Festival.

Directed by Maryam Zarei, ‘Magralen’ won the best film award at the 57th edition of the Maltese event.

The Iranian-Canadian production tells the story of a family that lives in a car cemetery. The family’s young girl, who is blind, has made a car along with her elder brother in the automobile graveyard in which they spend their days.

“An incident disrupts the family's shaky order. Children who are struggling to cope with that incident are trying to find their own way. The elder brother tries to portray the bitter reality in a different way for his sister,” a synopsis for the film reads.

The Golden Knight Malta International Short Film Festival is “one of the longest running film festivals of its kind worldwide”, according to the gala’s website.

The short film event is open to non-professional productions, film school students as well as commercial productions.

The event took place on November 30, 2019.
